Learning to Lead
Great leaders make leadership look easy but learning to lead can have its share of challenges. Many women shy away from thinking of themselves as leaders in spite of using leadership skills every day of their working lives. This workshop will help you advance your leadership journey, whatever stage you’ve reached. Maybe you’re 2 years in to your first job and need advice about how to marshal diverse teams of people who are mostly more senior than you, or perhaps you’ve just been promoted into a leadership position for the first time and could do with some tips. You’ll hear from a range of inspiring female leaders from the communications industry about what has worked for them (and also what hasn’t) and have the opportunity to ask them any question you like.
The final speaker list will be confirmed shortly but so far includes:
Linda Smith Executive Chairman, Radio Advertising Bureau
Diana Tickell, UK Director of Communications, Barnardos.
If there are any women in your organisation that you feel would benefit from attending this event, please forward this email to them and encourage them to come along. It is appropriate for anyone with more than around 2 years in the business. (Monday 14 June at Interbrand, 85 Strand, London, WC2R 0DW 6.15pm for 6.30 until 8.30pm). Drinks and snacks provided, tickets £40 per head).
Booking form is attached and those wishing to attend can email xanthe.giles@thinkbox.tv or call 020 7630 2327 for tickets and further information.

What is Gather?
Organised by WACL (Women in Advertising and Communication London), with all money raised donated to charity, Gather is the leading training event for female rising stars in the communications industry.
Now in its 15th year it is consistently rated by delegates as the best value, most practical and most fun training event they have ever been to. 2009 was a total sell-out and so oversubscribed that we had to turn down a number of bookings.
Your time of opportunity
Is the broad theme of this year’s event. At the start of a new decade and with the ending of the recession women in the communications industry have a real opportunity to make a big impact on their businesses and careers.
What will the day involve?
The day will be hosted by Elizabeth Fagan, President of WACL and Marketing Director of Boots UK. It will feature a scorching line-up of senior female role models: from CEOs of agencies to senior Marketing Directors giving their time for free to train young women in the industry.
There will also be an interactive coaching session by Fiona Parashar and Lucy Ryan of Leadership Coaching. And break out groups in the afternoon tailored to specific challenges such as “Getting the right work/life balance” and “Assertiveness and how to get what you want” This year the event will be held at the brand new Kings Place and will include close of day networking drinks offering the opportunity to meet a wider group of WACL members.
Who should attend?
The day is designed for female rising stars in the communications industry (advertisers, agencies and media owners). Typically delegates have between 3 and 5 years experience in the industry but each year sees a broad range of attendees from entry level graduates to women with 20 years experience, all of whom give it rave reviews.
Why choose this course?
With the start of a new decade and the importance of holding on to your raising stars training can really motivate these key players in your team. There is no better value nor more motivating training opportunity than this one.
How much is it?
Tickets are normally £425 plus VAT

Politics
Appropriately enough in this election year, politics is the theme of the first WACL workshop of 2010. When the word “politics” is used in relation to business it tends to carry associations of deviousness, selfishness and manipulation. Many women therefore reject the idea of working to improve their political skills in the mistaken belief that doing so would somehow damage their integrity.
This workshop will help you to appreciate that politics is actually about how groups of people make decisions; that all organisations have formal and informal procedures for making things happen; that you need to work out how to influence these in order to achieve the result that you want and that, of course, this can be for the benefit of others as well as yourself. You will see that it is not simply about some stark choice between Machiavellian behaviour and total naivety.
Delegates will get the wisdom and advice on this fascinating subject from our expert panel and are then free to ask any question they like and participate in the subsequent discussion. The panel will share their top tips and a few personal cautionary tales. Previous delegates have found the workshops to be enormous fun, incredibly honest, great value and of immense practical help.
Final speaker line-up for this event are:
Miranda Kennett, Founder First Class Coach (workshop chair)
Francesca Ecsery, Global Sales Director, Cheapflights
Ros King, Managing Director American Express, Ogilvy Group
Wendy Proctor, Client Director, COI
Karina Wilsher, Managing Director, Fallon

Career Management
As usual the inspiration for this workshop came from 2 speakers at Gather: Rita Clifton whose advice was “Plan the career you want or you get the one that shows up” and Farah Ramzan Golant who reminded everyone that “You are always in training for your future career”. We know that many women do not always find it easy to be proactive as far as their own development and progression is concerned. So, this workshop is designed to give you some useful and practical tips on issues such as how to take a more proactive role in your career development, how to increase your chances of being in the right place at the right time, how to capitalise on opportunities, how to network and how to ensure that your achievements are recognised and your contribution is acknowledged.
Delegates will get the wisdom and advice on all of these from an expert panel and are then free to ask any question they like and participate in the subsequent discussion. Previous delegates have found the workshops to be enormous fun, incredibly honest, great value and of immense practical help.
For this workshop we have the usual brilliant line-up of senior women speakers including:
Annette King, CEO, OgilvyOne
Alex Lewis, Marketing Director, The Times & Sunday Times
